Ulimasao

The Ulimasao is an oar used for paddling. Uli means "to steer" and sao means "safe and/or freedom" so the name Ulimasao means "to steer towards freedom"

It can be used as a symbol of peace, safety and navigation.

Fa’amategataua

The Fa’amategataua is a club shaped as a spear with teeth on both sides. It can be translated to mean "the end of the war" and was the most powerful weapon that Nafanua had.

It can be a symbol of strength and power, used only when one needs to end a mighty struggle.

Ta Fesilafa’i

Ta Fesilafa’i is a club shaped like a hook with sharp teeth facing side ways. The name means "to strike with courtesy".

This was the main weapon used by Nafanua against her enemies in battle.

It can represent fairness, strength and mercy.

Fa’auli’ulito

The Fa’auli’ulito is a club shaped like a bat. It was the weapon given by Nafanua to her adopted parents in her attempt to convince her enemies to unite in peace and harmony.

It can be used as a symbol of power.

STEP 2: Choose a Pattern

Fa'agogo

The Fa'agogo is known across the Pacific as the Frigate bird. They are extremely good at flying long distances and are known to have incredible stamina to fly over oceans.

They are a symbol of navigation, perseverance and good luck.

Fa'a'atualoa

The Fa'a'atualoa is a pattern that represents the centipede. It is recognised as a symbol of family and protection.

The centipede has a piercing bite  so it can also represent pain or strength.

Fa'aulutao

The Fa'aulutao is a spearhead pattern used widely across the pacific.

It signifies the great courage, strength and determination of a warrior needed to fight a battle and survive another day.

Fa'avae'ali

The Fa'avae'ali is a V-shaped symbol that represents the legs of the wooden head rest that Matai (Samoan Chiefs) sleep on.

This pattern represents support, service and caring for your family.

Fa'a'alu'alu

The Fa'a'alu'alu is a jellyfish pattern. It is commonly found on the female tatau (tatoo) called the Malu.

This ancient sea creature is a strong symbol of female strength and agility.


Nifo o le Malie

The word 'Malie' means shark and the word Nifo means 'tooth'.

This shark tooth pattern can be used as a symbol of protection. The shark is a ferocious being so it can also symbolise power.
