New Zealand Maritime Museum

Our Request

Based in Auckland, the New Zealand Maritime Museum was looking to create a more engaging experience at their Hawaiki Gallery. The gallery features a world-class display of replica voyaging canoes from Oceania, whereby visitors can learn about the vessels used by the navigators of Te Moana Nui a Kiwa. Because the information was solely displayed through text, the rich content was missing a key element. Presented to us was Sonny, a modern day navigator. The Hawaiki Gallery needed to be infused with a human touch that was conducive to the way Pasifika people used oral communication to preserve and pass on knowledge.

Our Solution

Look no further. We created Sonny as a digital storyteller using a painted frame aesthetic. Through animating the portrait and background illustrations, as well as adding voice over, the character came to life in an authentic and magically compelling way. Visitors were educated on Pasifika navigators and their methods for developing ancient marine ships with the human, authentic touch of Sonny that was sought by the Maritime Museum.
